I'm sure they didn't mean it, but there's a distinct whiff of Leslie `Phillips about this ad. Like him, it thinks it's terribly suave, but actually it's awfully dated and rather clumsy, though strangely fascinating, and even quite engaging to watch.

In fact now I come to think of it, the ad would have been a whole lot better if they'd got Leslie Phillips to take the lead role. I think he's still with us, indeed I thought I saw him not too long ago in a commercial for Pimms. That might have been a problem, but I bet Pimms and Gordons are both made by the same heartless multinational, so they could have done some kind of deal.

I think old Leslie would have lifted this piece out of the swamp of self regard in which it is slowly drowning. It could have been a bit of a laugh, and taken away some of the stuff-pot imagery that still hangs around Gordons, instead of just adding to it.
