I was initially a bit confused by this ad. The first time I saw it I didn't actually twig it was in Dutch. Ok, I was a bit sozzled, having been crumping into some very fine Pinot Grigio blush which was on special offer at my local wine shed. Highly recommended by the way, tastes like rose, but isn't as girly pink.

Anyway I had to look at the ad a couple of times before I realised that the bird was speaking what I can only assume is Dutch. So I thought, maybe Heineken are going for the authenticity route, fair enough, it does come from Holland and they've got rid of that UK brewed horsepiss that you used to get in pubs. But then it occurred to me that I wasn't watching the ad on the telly, I said I was a bit bongo'd, so it is obviously just a Dutch ad that has been uploaded onto the site. I'm glad we've got that sorted then.

I watched it again in the morning, when I was sober and I suppose it's not too bad in its way. It's kind of like a lot of those Budweiser ads that they do in the States, but it is in Dutch and it sort of suffers as a result. The kind of cliché reactions that it's trading off are fundamentally American, and trying to do them in old Amsterdam knocks a considerable degree of sparkle off things. Admittedly it's a lot better than some of the ghastly attempts to do this sort of thing that have appeared in the UK, so a bit like their football team, the Dutch are doing a better job than you might expect.
