I have to say that I never thought I would live to see this. Wilson Kepple and Betty were an obscurely barmy music hall act who achieved some fame during the 20s and 30s by the simple expedient of doing amazingly silly dance routines with an Egyptian flavour. I certainly had almost no knowledge of them, my mother was only just aware of them, they were really of my grandmothers generation. And yet here they, exhumed and suitably re-animated and now starring in a commercial for gocompare.com in 2010. By what process the creative people at gocompare.com's agency came by Wilson Kepple and Betty I cannot imagine. Why the annoying opera singer is in an Egyptian tomb is a mystery as well, a tentative link might be that Verdi's opera Aida was set in Egypt, but I suppose that once he was in one, it might only be a matter of time before someone stumbled across WK&B.

To be honest, I find this commercial much less irritating than some of its previous incarnations. Perhaps, by taking the spotlight off the opera singer, he becomes less intrusive and annoying. There is certainly a lot else to look at in this ad, they've thrown everything at it, cheesy sets, cheesy dancing, they've even managed to find time to re-address the ancient mummy joke, though I have to say I have no real idea what they were trying to sell me.

All in all it could be described as harmless fun, and I for one, am happy to see the extraordinary talents of Wilson Kepple and Betty bought to the attention of a whole new generation, in a whole new century. I suspect that they will outlive their current sponsors and will still be bringing pleasure to people long after gocompare.com and their opera singer have vanished without trace.
